A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD VOL. V

Good morning from summery California. I’ve had two cups of coffee this morning which is the 2024 equivalent of living life on the edge for me. The Inner Magic show last week at Zebulon went exceptional. It was a delight for Mike and I to play with Lia Braswell on drums. She’ll be joining us for more shows in the future. Ruth came out at the end of our set two join us for a couple songs. A shambolic version of Jesus & Mary Chain’s “On The Wall” and Chromatics’ “The River.” It always feels special and natural getting to perform live with Ruth. Here’s a pic of us from that night taken by Dug Moore.

I’ve been so busy with different projects this summer. More of which will be shared before autumn arrives. I am so grateful and lucky for all the cool things I get to work on and for all my talented collaborators whom I learn so much from.

A couple records I’ve been really into lately are Nara Leão’s 1971 album “Nara Des Anos Depois.” I discovered this one after learning that the Brazilian guitarist Tuca, (the woman who played guitar and played a big part in making Françoise Hardy’s “La Question” album as epic as it is) played guitar on it and was very involved in the creation of this album. It’s everything I want in a record. It’s lean, vibey, minimal, airy. Maybe it is the Brazilian equivalent of “La Question.” It definitely fills the room with some Sensual Summer Magic.

Another album I’ve played repeatedly since it came out is Roedelius and Arnold Kasar’s “Zensibility.” If you know Roedelius then you know what you’re getting into with this one. And if you don’t know Roedelius, then this album is a great introduction to the healing world of his music.

The past year as I’ve discovered or rediscovered songs, new or old that move me, I throw it into this Spotify playlist of mine called “WKRP IN CALIFORNIA.” I’m constantly adding new music to it every week so if you’re interested in hearing some gems, there’s a lot of great stuff here.

I’ll always remember flipping through my parents record collection as a teenager and coming across this Françoise Hardy album of theirs. Sometimes you discover an artist and they forever change how you see and experience the world. Françoise Hardy did that for me. This is a picture of that actual album of my parents’ which is now in my collection. ☮️
